The developers intended to adopt an approach inspired by Uncharted 2.
Players have recently been reminded of Dante’s Inferno after IGN published a feature about a sequel that never made it to release.
The project was expected to be called “Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio” (or simply Dante’s Purgatorio). IGN obtained a set of internal materials, including concept art, cutscene storyboards, level-geometry screenshots, and a 240-page script written by Assassin’s Creed 2 co-writer Joshua Rubin.
The script includes level outlines, boss encounters and narrative twists — suggesting the sequel progressed farther in development than previously believed.
Visceral intended to take the sequel in a somewhat different direction than expected — for instance, the narrative would fuse elements of The Divine Comedy with John Milton’s Paradise Lost.
A former Visceral employee told IGN about the sequel’s inspiration — in this case, Uncharted 2:
The original game was largely influenced by God of War. While we were developing the sequel, Uncharted 2 had a strong impact on single-player design: cutscenes and QTEs were replaced by scripted gameplay sequences that kept the player fully in control.
The action would unfold on a mountain called Purgatory:
The mountain is split into nine tiers, or terraces, each themed around the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust. At its base, a cliff hosts colossal gates, while the seemingly unreachable summit conceals the Garden of Eden. Each terrace would function as a campaign arena with its own trials, puzzles, enemies and a Cave of Visions.
