Leaked $30 Magic Commander decks sound like a format reset

The upcoming in-universe Magic: The Gathering expansion, Reality Fracture, is set to arrive accompanied by a single four-color Commander deck. While June promises a quartet of decks tied to Marvel Super Heroes, August’s The Hobbit release notably lacks any preconstructed offerings. Perhaps to remedy this dearth of Commander options this autumn, Wizards of the Coast has quietly surfaced five new mono-colored Commander decks via online retailers, slated to debut alongside Reality Fracture. Despite an already overflowing market of precons, these particular decks have piqued my interest, and I am seriously considering picking up a few.

A Clean Start

The landscape has shifted considerably since the 2022 Starter Commander decks debuted. Those two-color lists have seen their secondary market prices climb significantly—particularly the Draconic Destruction deck—which is unfortunate, as they were originally positioned as accessible entry points for new players. Fortunately, these new Foundations decks appear to capably fill that void.

Beyond their attractive $30 price point, each deck is restricted to a single color. This design choice not only eases the learning curve for beginners but also establishes a clear path for customization. If you enjoy playing the White “Calling All Angels” deck, for example, it’s intuitive to begin swapping in new white cards to refine the strategy. With themes covering dragons, dinosaurs, angels, zombies, and artifacts, every color features a straightforward upgrade path paired with a simple, engaging playstyle. The green “Tramplesaurus Rex” deck, predictably, focuses on massive creatures; it’s an effortless pilot for newcomers who understand the core loop of ramping mana to drop heavy-hitting dinosaurs onto the board.

Keeping It Simple

It is also worth noting that, with the rare exception of the five-color Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deck, preconstructed products have become steadily more intricate over the past few years.

Between the introduction of specific mechanics like the “Ring tempting you” from Tales of Middle-earth or the -1/-1 Blight counters in Lorwyn Eclipsed, it has become increasingly challenging to find precons that are easy to pick up and play—especially if you aren’t interested in Universes Beyond titles like Final Fantasy. Moreover, many of these niche decks carry premium price tags.

Consequently, having a series of $30 precons that offer a balanced, approachable experience without disrupting a local game night’s power level is a fantastic way to introduce friends to the format or to Magic as a whole.

I recently sat down for a Commander match with my wife, and honestly, these decks would have been perfect for that casual environment, rather than forcing a matchup between more complex lists like Lorehold Spirit and Food & Fellowship.

With that in mind, I think these are essential pickups to have on hand for anyone curious about the game. Whether you are a veteran looking for a low-stakes experience or bringing a new player into the fold, these decks offer a welcoming entry point. The barrier to entry has rarely been lower.
