Kim Petras has officially shifted gears into her latest creative chapter, unveiling the high-energy music video for her new single, “Need for Speed,” this Wednesday (April 22).
The visual narrative serves as a biting satire on the relentless machinery of pop stardom. It opens with Petras wandering through a luxurious estate as her assets are systematically repossessed. After receiving a notification from her “Label” declaring her bankrupt, the singer leans into the absurdity of the moment, playfully brandishing a series of products in a hilariously transparent display of corporate sponsorship.
“My label yelling in my ear / ‘Cause they love the money / And they want it now,” she belts, capturing the suffocating pressure of industry demands. The scene culminates in a poker match where she recklessly wagers her 2023 Grammy award—earned for her Sam Smith collaboration “Unholy”—ultimately watching the accolade slip through her fingers.
The video reaches its crescendo as Petras steers a convertible off a cliff, cruising past ominous road signs that mockingly warn of a “Flop” and declare, “Your career is over.”
Reflecting on the track’s thematic depth, Petras explained that the song explores the exhausting pursuit of endless hits and superficial success. She noted that this trajectory often strips away an artist’s identity, leaving them with nothing but a frantic, fast-paced existence devoid of a personal life.
“Need for Speed” serves as a bold introduction to her highly anticipated album, Detour, released through her own independent venture, BunHead Records. This transition follows Petras’ public critique of Republic Records earlier this year, where she openly lobbied for her release from the label after citing months of industry neglect.
