The latest PlayStation State of Play opened with a captivating surprise: the reveal of a sequel to the 2021 hit Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Titled Kena: Scars of Kosmora, this next chapter features an older, more seasoned protagonist venturing into uncharted territories, with a release scheduled for later this year.

In this upcoming journey, Kena—now a renowned Spirit Guide—travels to a cryptic new island. Her mission is personal: she seeks a remedy for a spreading affliction while hoping to reunite with a long-lost companion. The stakes are raised when her iconic staff is fractured by a potent corruption, forcing her to master ancient, elemental Spirit Guiding techniques to defend herself against new threats.

Notably, the debut trailer suggests a shift in Kena’s allies. The adorable Rot from the original game are absent, replaced by new mystical companions including a small, ethereal fox. The footage also showcases Kena traversing an expansive world on the back of a deer-like creature. Developer Ember Lab is promising a more sophisticated and fluid combat system; Kena still utilizes her staff for rhythmic combos and parries, but she can now manifest massive green crystals to crush enemies or transform her weapon into a heavy, claymore-style blade for devastating strikes.

Kena: Scars of Kosmora is slated to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC before the end of the year.
