Kelly Clarkson called out a Brooklyn store on Saturday (Oct. 10) for treating her poorly in an experience that mirrored the 1990 film Pretty Woman.
The 44-year-old artist shared the experience on social media.
“Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me,” Clarkson wrote on X.
“Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale. But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman. For sure, check it out 👎.”
Clarkson, who relocated to New York in 2023, referenced the movie scene where Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, faces dismissal from upscale sales associates due to her attire.
In the film, Vivian returns dressed to impress with shopping bags from other stores and tells the staff member, “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”
Art of Play responded via Instagram Stories by posting customer messages defending the business. One user wrote, “Can’t speak to everyone else’s experience, but @artofplay has been quite welcoming during every one of my visits. Let’s all extend a bit of grace to each other.” Another user added, “For what it’s worth I think @artofplay is a great store!”
Clarkson announced in February that she would end The Kelly Clarkson Show after seven seasons to prioritize her children. The talk show won a Daytime Emmy, and its series finale aired in August with a Kellyoke performance of “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters alongside her tracks “Since U Been Gone” and “Stronger.”
During a late-September visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers, Clarkson talked about rejoining The Voice for season 30 and described working with returning coach Adam Levine and new coaches Queen Latifah and Riley Green as “seamless.”
Her latest album, Chemistry, came out in 2023 and reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200.
