Lance Bass revealed details about his earnings during *NSYNC’s peak, stating that he received a $35 daily per diem while the group ranked among the biggest acts worldwide.
During an appearance on The Zach Sang Show, the 47-year-old singer stated that his income did not reflect the band’s popularity. “We had a per diem: $35 a day,” Bass stated. “Our first check was a $10,000 check after years of No. 1 albums, sellout tours. I don’t know how many millions I made off of merchandise, because merchandise was insane.” He recalled being told to appreciate the $10,000 check because he had worked for two or three years without pay.
Bass, who performed alongside Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Joey Fatone, disputed the assumption that the band made him wealthy. “People think I’m so filthy rich from *NSYNC, but no,” he stated. “Not at all. I didn’t make money with *NSYNC, like, hardly at all.” He noted that he continues to earn residuals, though the amount is minimal, and that he generated significantly more income after the group went on hiatus in 2002.
He alleged that the record label and the group’s late manager, Lou Pearlman, collected the vast majority of the funds, stating they made a significant amount. Pearlman, who managed *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, received a 2008 conviction for money laundering, conspiracy, and bankruptcy fraud related to a long-running Ponzi scheme and died in prison in 2016.
