Cornell University has canceled its upcoming homecoming concert following backlash over its handling of sexual assault allegations.
The Cornell Concert Commission announced on Instagram Friday (Oct. 9) that it called off an Oct. 17 homecoming concert at Barton Hall in Ithaca, New York, featuring indie-pop duo Between Friends.
“The Cornell Concert Commission is a student-run organization and, as students, we stand with Jane Doe and all survivors of sexual violence,” the post states. “It takes so much strength to come forward with such a painful truth, and Jane Doe needs all the support she can get to stay strong during this turbulent time.”
The cancellation follows rising scrutiny over a lawsuit filed in September against Cornell University and seven members of its Chi Phi fraternity by a woman identified as Jane Doe. The lawsuit alleges that the men gave her drugs and alcohol before repeatedly sexually assaulting and raping her at an October 2024 fraternity party. The men denied wrongdoing, stating that the encounters were consensual or misrepresented in the lawsuit, according to The New York Times.
Cornell President Michael I. Kotlikoff promised an independent review of the university’s handling of the case on Oct. 3, stating, “We as an administration and community must do better.” Three days later, Cornell announced that former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates would lead the review.
“It is essential that we advocate and stand up for those failed by the university’s administration,” the Cornell Concert Commission added on Instagram. “We call on Cornell to create meaningful changes that protect and support survivors.”
The concert commission stated it is organizing a charity event featuring student bands and DJs to support sexual violence prevention efforts. Proceeds from the event will benefit RAINN, a nonprofit organization that combats sexual violence.
If you or anyone you know needs support, you can reach out to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The organization provides free, confidential support to sexual assault victims. Call RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE) — which is available 24/7, 365 days — or visit the anti-sexual violence organization’s website.
