Ashnikko performs on triple j’s Like A Version triple j

Ashnikko made her Like A Version debut on triple j by covering Gwen Stefani’s 2004 solo hit “What You Waiting For?”

While on her Australian tour, Ashnikko performed in the triple j studio accompanied by a full backing band, which included a harpist, for a theatrical and electropop-influenced rendition that stayed mostly faithful to Stefani’s original work while incorporating her own style. She also performed her own song “Sticky Fingers.”

Ashnikko chose the cover personally, describing “What You Waiting For?” as “the song of my childhood” and the track that inspired her to pursue a music career. She credited Stefani’s debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. as a formative influence on her artistry. During her accompanying interview with hosts Abby Butler and Tyrone Pynor, she discussed bird watching and the significance of choreography in her live shows.

“What You Waiting For?” served as the lead single from Stefani’s 2004 debut solo album and reached No. 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Love. Angel. Music. Baby. peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and featured the hits “Hollaback Girl” — which became Stefani’s first Hot 100 No. 1 — and “Rich Girl.” Stefani is a four-time Grammy winner and the longtime frontwoman of No Doubt.

American artist Ashnikko gained initial prominence in 2019 with her viral TikTok hit “Stupid,” which reached No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a platinum certification. Her 2023 debut album Weedkiller charted on the Billboard 200, establishing a dedicated following through her blend of hyperpop, rap, and alternative music. Her Like A Version appearance joins a series of performances on the Australian segment.
