Nearly two decades after saying “I do,” Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman have officially finalized their divorce. Legal documents confirm that their marriage was formally dissolved on Tuesday, January 6, marking the end of a high-profile union that lasted 19 years.
According to filings obtained from the Fourth Circuit Court of Davidson County, Tennessee—where the former couple maintained a residence in Nashville—the split is now absolute. The settlement dictates that neither party will receive spousal support or alimony. Additionally, both Urban and Kidman have agreed to be responsible for their own respective legal fees and court costs.
The Path to Separation
The Oscar-winning actress and the country music superstar first went public with their separation in September, with Kidman filing for divorce shortly thereafter. In the initial paperwork, Kidman cited “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences” as the catalyst for the split. From the outset, both parties reportedly sought an amicable resolution regarding the division of their joint assets.
Central to the final agreement is a structured parenting plan for their two teenage daughters, Sunday and Faith. The signed arrangement grants Kidman primary custody for 306 days of the year, while Urban will host the children every other weekend. While the parents maintain joint responsibility for major life decisions, the documents specify that Kidman holds final decision-making authority should a disagreement occur regarding the girls’ upbringing.
A Look Back at Their Journey
The couple’s romance began in 2005, leading to a wedding in Sydney, Australia, in June 2006. Throughout their marriage, Kidman often spoke candidly about her devotion to Urban, famously telling CBS Mornings in 2022 that meeting him was “the best thing that’s ever happened” to her.
Signs of the impending change began to surface in early 2025. One of their final public appearances took place at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, followed by a FIFA Club World Cup match in June. However, fans noticed a shift during an October concert when Urban pointedly modified the lyrics to his hit song “The Fighter.” The track, which was originally inspired by Kidman, saw Urban swap romantic identifiers for more neutral language while performing alongside Maggie Baugh.
Kidman also appeared to hint at the transition in a Vogue interview conducted just before the separation became public. Reflecting on life’s unpredictable nature, she mused about how often people are taught that they know where their lives are headed, only for the path to change unexpectedly.
While the legal process has concluded, both stars have remained largely private regarding the personal details of their transition into this new chapter.
