Kaiju No. 8 to Return With Narumi’s Week at Work Spinoff

Kaiju No. 8 has grown into one of anime‘s most popular modern releases by blending giant-monster action in the vein of Godzilla with lighthearted workplace comedy. The story centers on Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old sanitation worker who dreams of enlisting in the Defense Force before mysteriously gaining the power to turn into a formidable humanoid kaiju. While massive battles drive the plot, much of the appeal comes from Kafka’s interactions with his fellow soldiers. Produced by Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass) and directed by Shigeyuki Miya, the series balances high-stakes set pieces with character-driven humor.

Before the next main story arc arrives, the franchise returns in September with Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work. The four-episode short anime puts the spotlight on Gen Narumi, the First Division captain who pairs unmatched combat skills with an unserious personality.

The side story reunites key creative talent behind the primary series, including director Shigeyuki Miya and character designer Tetsuya Nishio, with Production I.G handling animation. The four shorts embrace a more relaxed pace, detailing what the squad gets up to during regular working hours.

Viewers know Gen Narumi as an elite combatant and leader of the First Division. Narumi is arrogant, easily distracted, and far more passionate about playing video games than managing administrative duties. The short series leans into that contrast, tracking Narumi when he is away from the front lines.

Rather than adapting material directly from Naoya Matsumoto’s original manga, Narumi’s Week at Work presents an original story. The draft comes from Kizuku Watanabe, who worked on the comedy spinoff manga Kaiju No. 8: Relax. The four episodes explore Narumi’s chaotic routine and the mundane parts of his Defense Force role.
