Kacey Musgraves Discusses Polarizing Disco Balls at Shows

Kacey Musgraves is unfazed by reactions to the giant disco testicles prop she uses on her Middle of Nowhere Tour.

During her Tuesday, Sept. 1 show in New York City, Musgraves levitated above the Madison Square Garden crowd while sitting on the prop, which features human male testicles covered in mirror tiles. While singing “Rhinestoned” from her seventh studio album, Middle of Nowhere, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in May, she remarked that her manager did not tell her no.

The night prior at MSG, Musgraves tied the stage design into a speech about perseverance. She quipped that it takes two really big, slightly asymmetrical, sparkly balls alongside a lot of perseverance.

Musgraves added in comments captured in fan footage that her Nana always told her to do things big and sparkly if she was going to do them at all.

The prop debuted on Aug. 21 in Chicago during the opening show of her tour, drawing mixed reactions from audiences.

Country artist John Rich criticized the prop during an appearance on Tomi Lahren Is Fearless, calling it a cry for help. He stated that relying on such elements reflects on an artist’s music when they use circus-ish methods to gain attention, contrasting the approach with artist Ella Langley.

Musgraves continues her US tour through the end of October before heading to Australia, Scotland, and England for shows in January and February.
