Justin Timberlake Marks 20th Anniversary of FutureSex/LoveSounds

Justin Timberlake marked the 20th anniversary of his sophomore solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, on Tuesday (Sept. 8) with an Instagram post.

The post shared a carousel featuring two photos: one of Timberlake hitting a disco ball with a mallet during the original album shoot and another showing the track listing. An archival video shows a young Timberlake sitting between the photos. He captioned the post, “Life changing. THANK YOU.”

In the brief video, Timberlake comments on the project by saying, “Big disclaimer. This is not what you’re used to.”

FutureSex/LoveSounds came out on Sept. 8, 2006, marking a sonic shift following his 2002 solo debut, Justified. Produced largely alongside Timbaland and Danja, the album incorporated electronic, funk, R&B, and pop elements to create an experimental sound for the former *NSYNC member.

The project performed strongly on the Billboard charts. FutureSex/LoveSounds debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 as Timberlake’s first solo leader on the chart. Lead single “SexyBack” became his first solo Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, holding the top position for seven weeks. Subsequent singles “My Love” and “What Goes Around…Comes Around” gave the album three consecutive Hot 100 No. 1 hits.
