CEO Bob Iger has once again anointed a successor from the ranks of the theme parks division, naming Josh D’Amaro, the current Chairman of Disney Experiences, as the next leader of the entertainment monolith. While the previous transition to Bob Chapek proved to be a tumultuous two-year detour before Iger’s 2022 return, there is a palpable sense that this second attempt at a park-centric handoff might actually stick. For the initiated “Disney Adult,” D’Amaro is already a household name—or, more accurately, he is known by his viral alter ego: “Daddy Josh.”

The “Daddy Josh” phenomenon took root within the digital fandom almost immediately after D’Amaro stepped into Chapek’s former shoes at Disney Experiences in 2020. In stark contrast to the corporate stoicism of his predecessor, D’Amaro arrived with a youthful energy and a genuine reverence for the guest experience—qualities that resonated deeply with a fanbase still reeling from the controversial rollout of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. While Disney’s corporate communications team has steered clear of acknowledging the affectionate moniker, the nickname has become a staple of park discourse, used both in earnest praise and playful mockery. Regardless of the label, the consensus among enthusiasts seems to be one of optimism, particularly regarding the future of Disney’s physical locations.

D’Amaro is currently overseeing an unprecedented $60 billion investment strategy aimed at revolutionizing the global park portfolio. This ambitious roadmap includes a highly anticipated “Villains” land at Walt Disney World, an expansive Avatar-themed territory for Disneyland Resort, and the development of a brand-new international destination in Abu Dhabi. While his successor at Disney Experiences hasn’t been named, many industry insiders speculate that Jeff Vahle, the current president of Walt Disney World, is a frontrunner to fill D’Amaro’s shoes.

D’Amaro’s journey with the House of Mouse began in 1998 within the sales and travel marketing department. Over the decades, his steady ascension saw him lead both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts before taking on his current global chairmanship.

In a formal address regarding his promotion, D’Amaro expressed his gratitude: “I am immensely grateful to the board for entrusting me with leading a company that means so much to me and millions around the world. Predictably, the official statement lacked any references to “Daddy’s home”—a missed opportunity for viral marketing, perhaps, but a sensible choice for a multi-billion dollar corporation. D’Amaro will officially take the helm on March 18, coinciding with the company’s annual shareholder meeting. Joining him in the new leadership structure is Dana Walden, who will transition from her role as co-chair of Disney Entertainment to serve as President and Chief Creative Officer.
