Jon Bernthals Punisher Series Praised as Action Masterpiece
Fans have debated the best actor-to-character pairings ever since superhero movies and television became popular. That debate grew even louder as multiple actors took on iconic roles like Superman and Spider-Man. Nine years ago, Jon Bernthal delivered one of the finest casting matches in comic book history by stepping into the role of Frank Castle in The Punisher. Bernthal created one of the grittiest and most action-packed adaptations ever put on screen.
Bernthal first played Castle in Daredevil. That initial appearance set the stage for his solo debut, which followed his hunt for the men responsible for murdering his wife and children. Along the way, Castle clashed physically and morally with Matt Murdock. The Punisher picks up that narrative thread while introducing new complications for Frank, including a tech expert partner named David Liberman, also known as “Micro” (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), a returning fellow soldier named Billy Russo (Ben Barnes), and Homeland Security agent Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah), who wants to bring him in.
‘The Punisher’ doesn’t shy away from the character’s complexity

Part of the appeal of the Punisher is that he possesses no special abilities. He relies entirely on military training and an arsenal of firearms to dispense his own brand of justice to the wicked. Yet he also recognizes that killing criminals will never fill the void inside him. In the afterword to Punisher: The King of Killers, Jason Aaron describes Frank Castle’s life as a tragedy. The television series explores this emotional weight, revealing that Castle suffers from severe PTSD from his military service alongside the grief of losing his family, finding true peace only when he slaughters the wicked. Bernthal expanded on this concept in an interview regarding what drove him to play the character:
“He ain’t got a f***ing cape. He ain’t got any superpowers. He’s a f***ing tortured, angry father and husband who’s living in this unbelievable world of darkness and loss and torment.”
Both seasons of The Punisher give Castle ample opportunity to unleash his fury on the guilty. Season 1 reveals that Russo orchestrated the events leading to the deaths of Castle’s family. Castle ultimately takes his revenge by grinding his former friend’s face into a mirror, an act that does not kill Russo but transforms him into the heavily scarred villain Jigsaw. That sequence stands as just one of many blood-soaked action sequences in the show. Whether utilizing firefights, knives, or his bare hands, Castle discovers countless ways to deliver death.

Jon Bernthal recently returned to play the Punisher

When The Punisher ended in 2019, Jon Bernthal’s tenure in the role appeared finished. That conclusion proved temporary after Disney+ revived Marvel’s Netflix heroes with Daredevil: Born Again. Following discussions with Bernthal and a creative overhaul that brought in Punisher writer Dario Scardapane, Frank Castle made his return. In a moment fans had long awaited, Castle denounced a group of police officers who used his symbol to commit brutal murders, before gunning most of them down in cold blood.
Bernthal’s time with the character continued when he co-wrote and starred in the Marvel Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill and co-starred in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Viewers seeking more of his performance can revisit The Punisher, which remains brutal, uncompromising, and hard-hitting just like Frank Castle himself.
