John Legend Announces Pharrell-Produced Album Muse Led by New Song Daylight

John Legend and Pharrell Williams recorded an album in Paris last year titled Muse, which is scheduled for an October 23 release on Republic Records.

Written and recorded at Pharrell’s studio inside Louis Vuitton’s headquarters, where Pharrell serves as men’s creative director, the project features a Black James Bond aesthetic with a modern backbeat foundation, according to Legend.

“You can hear traces of me and traces of him, but it sounds like something new for the both of us. The combination of me and Pharrell, on paper, I think, is a good idea. And the execution is even better,” Legend stated in a press release issued Tuesday, September 8.

“I think my repertoire has always been very diverse, but the piano-driven ballads have gotten the most traction throughout my career. I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new,” Legend noted of the project, which draws influence from artists like Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, and Marvin Gaye.

“Daylight,” the lead single from Muse, launched on streaming services today. Legend previewed the song with a Nashville performance broadcast during CBS’s American Tailgate the previous night.

Another album track, “Pray for Ya,” provided the soundtrack for Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 Men’s show.

Pharrell produced the entire record, co-wrote the songs, and appears as a featured artist on six tracks.

“When Pharrell called me, I thought, let’s do this,” Legend said, explaining that his guest vocal on the Clipse track “The Birds Don’t Sing” inspired Pharrell—who produced Clipse’s 2025 release Let God Sort ‘Em Out—to collaborate on a full album. “A lot of people would have imagined we’d done something like this already, but we hadn’t. It felt past due.”

Reciprocating Legend’s earlier feature, Clipse appears on the Muse track “Bodies on the Floor.”

The title Muse draws partial inspiration from the nine Muses of ancient Greek mythology. It is also the title of the opening track, which details a tumultuous relationship between a man and his muse set against the backdrop of Paris and high art, according to the press release. While the song’s muse is a fictional character created by the duo, Legend added, “Our ancestors are our muses. My music has always been me channeling the ancestors, taking what they gave us and making something new.”

“I recorded some songs on this album that [Pharrell] fully wrote, which I almost never do,” Legend said, noting that Pharrell thanked him for his trust and patience during the collaborative process. “It’s not about winning the argument or ego. It’s about the music winning. Every battle should be won by the art.”

“There are plenty of artists who get to a point in their career where they don’t make anything new. We can just play the hits; we can stay in our comfort zone. But I believe it’s important to keep the mindset that I have to continue to prove myself. I wanted this album to have that sense of urgency — to feel like something that needed to be made and is fully worthy of my audience’s attention,” Legend stated.
