Jim Carrey Touted for Role of Freddy Krueger

Chuck Russell, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, has named his top pick to play a new Freddy Krueger.

Russell says the iconic antagonist could be convincingly brought to life by Jim Carrey, the star of The Mask and Ace Ventura.

“I think Jim can do anything he commits to, if he has the passion for it. For Jim to pull this off, the Elm Street series would need a breakthrough similar to what Wes [Craven] achieved with his new Nightmare (the 2010 reboot — ed.),” the filmmaker said on the Development Hell podcast.

Russell previously remarked that the original Freddy actor, Robert Englund, is “too old” for the role. He also suggested Hollywood take a look at Kevin Bacon.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise began in 1984 and has produced several sequels. Carrey recently led a feature-film adaptation of the animated series The Jetsons for Warner Bros.
