Jason Momoa declines role in Helldivers film adaptation

Reports indicate that Jason Momoa has officially stepped away from the upcoming Helldivers movie, in which he was slated to star in the lead role.

While the specific reasons behind his departure remain undisclosed, news of his initial attachment to the project first surfaced in February. Despite this casting change, the film remains on schedule for its theatrical release on November 10, 2027, and the production team is actively seeking a replacement for the lead role.

The film is being directed by Justin Lin (known for F9: The Fast Saga), with Gary Dauberman (It) penning the script. The project is a collaborative effort between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.

The Helldivers franchisetrans. Hell-divers made its debut in 2015, followed by a highly successful sequel in the spring of 2024. The story follows an elite squad of soldiers serving “Super Earth” as they wage war against three distinct factions: the Bugs, the Cyborgs, and the Illuminate.

Momoa has a busy schedule ahead, with appearances expected later this year in Supergirl, Street Fighter, and Dune: Part Three. Currently, he is in the midst of filming the sequel to A Minecraft Movie.
