J.J. Abrams Sci-Fi Series Fringe Becomes Available to Stream for Free

J.J. Abrams helped co-create Lost, the prototype for puzzle-box television built on shock reveals and mysteries. The 2004 pilot introduced fans to a disoriented Jack Shephard, played by Matthew Fox, who wakes up in a jungle, surveys the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815, and aids survivors.

Abrams directed that pilot before moving on from Lost in 2005. Three years later, the Cloverfield director recreated similar conditions in his paranormal sci-fi series, Fringe, which opened with an aerial disaster. Although the plane lands safely on autopilot, the state of the passengers raises unsettling questions.

What is Fringe about?

In Fringe, the FBI supports a Joint Federal Task Force known as the Fringe Division, which investigates cases related to speculative science such as parallel universes and technological singularities. The team includes Agent Olivia Dunham, played by Anna Torv; Dr. Walter Bishop, played by John Noble; and his estranged son, Peter Bishop, played by Joshua Jackson.

The series opens with the trio investigating cases around Reiden Lake tied to a doomsday event planned by rogue scientists. The team learns secrets about one another, adding psychological strain to their unorthodox lives.

Fringe follows the group as they solve scientific cases that challenge the ethics of fringe knowledge. Walter serves as the mad scientist of the group, engaging in dubious experiments with irreverence. His dynamic with Peter and Olivia shapes the procedural format of the early seasons, where the characters deal with cognitive abilities, dimensional problems, and quantum entanglement.

At first glance, Fringe resembles genre shows like The X-Files or The Twilight Zone, drawing on outlandish plotlines and standalone episodes. For instance, the season 4 episode “Welcome to Westfield” features a reality-bending anomaly reminiscent of The Twilight Zone. The series also prioritizes empathy and emotional storytelling about biological and found family while reality shifts around them.

A sense of humor breaks up the tension. Even serious characters like FBI boss Phillip Broyles, played by Lance Reddick, experience moments of levity.

The science in the show is often inaccurate, but this does not hinder its appeal. Viewers do not need an understanding of fringe science to follow the narrative, as the vulnerability of the central trio grounds the situations.

Although Fringe aired on Fox during the era of traditional broadcast and DVD releases, the narrative works well for modern viewing habits. The fantastical elements succeed because of the grounded connections between the characters, combining intellect and empathy.
