Global annihilation looms in the opening salvo of Invincible season 4, driving Mark Grayson to commit the unthinkable: the killing of an innocent. While the narrative nuances behind this act are layered in spoilers, the series’ young lead is forced into a corner where no good options remain—a choice that casts a long, dark shadow over the episodes that follow. As the season unfolds, Earth’s superhero community finds itself embroiled in a philosophical rift regarding Mark’s (Steven Yeun) lethal pragmatism. They all cling to the ideal that murder is an absolute evil, yet a grim reality sets in: some existential threats will never cease until they are permanently silenced.

Paradoxically, this same pragmatic struggle mirrors the primary hurdle currently facing Invincible. Robert Kirkman’s animated powerhouse on Prime Video initially surged into the cultural zeitgeist as a visceral, uncompromising subversion of superhero tropes. The seismic revelation in the first season—that the Superman-adjacent Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) was actually a vanguard for a fascist alien empire—anchored a gripping story about his son, Mark. However, in the years following, the show has often prioritized expansive world-building over the core narrative that first hooked its audience. While side stories—particularly those featuring the brilliant Gillian Jacobs as Atom Eve—are frequently excellent, the series occasionally feels like it’s drifting in place rather than accelerating toward its grand finale.

As expected, the initial chapters of season 4 cycle through a gallery of familiar antagonists—from Martian hive minds to stony-skinned mobsters and insectoid invaders—as Mark dutifully plays the role of the planetary savior. For the series to truly mature, it needs to clear the board of these repetitive conflicts. Despite its vibrant, comic-book aesthetic, *Invincible* isn't a "villain of the week" procedural where the status quo is preserved; it’s a saga that demands progression.

Fortunately, the fourth season eventually finds its footing by narrowing its gaze on the Viltrumites, the imperialist aliens who have haunted the periphery since the show's inception. Yet, the journey to this critical plot point is so deliberate that co-showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa might find themselves forced to rush the most compelling aspects of the story as the season reaches its climax.

At the dawn of season 4, Mark is still wrestling with the psychic scars of his encounter with malevolent multiversal doubles and his brutal, near-fatal clash with the unstoppable Conquest. Despite his internal fragility, he remains at the front lines with the Guardians of the Globe, a team that has finally achieved a semblance of synergy despite internal friction over who truly holds the reins. Meanwhile, Omni-Man traverses the stars, attempting to atone for a lifetime of galactic conquest.

Eventually, the Earth-centric conflicts recede, paving the way for Mark and Nolan to reunite for a mission in deep space. This transition injects the season with a much-needed sense of purpose and momentum. It finally feels like the narrative is steering toward a definitive destination rather than just coasting on its high production values and entertaining action.

That said, having screened six of the eight upcoming episodes, I have lingering doubts about the show's ability to provide a resonant conclusion in such a short window. The sixth episode ends on such a high-stakes note that I initially mistook it for a season finale. Knowing only two episodes remain, I worry the creators are sprinting through a storyline that deserves more room to breathe.

Pacing concerns aside, *Invincible* remains high-quality television. The early episodes strike a compelling balance between grand sci-fi spectacle and intimate, grounded character beats. Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh) is given a significant emotional arc as she navigates the wreckage of her life and begins to forge a path forward beyond the trauma of Nolan’s betrayal.

Nolan himself serves as the emotional anchor of season 4. J.K. Simmons delivers a masterclass in voice acting, portraying a "fallen god" figure who is genuinely striving for redemption. Witnessing a character formerly defined by cold brutality transition into something approaching heroism is some of the most engaging storytelling the series has offered to date.

The show also peels back the layers of Viltrumite culture through a blend of exposition and flashbacks, humanizing the villains without excusing their atrocities. It creates a complex dynamic where you remain desperate to see them defeated, yet feel a flicker of tragedy when their lives are extinguished.

*Invincible* still carries an undeniable impact, but season 4 feels like a series navigating substantial growing pains. While Kirkman and Racioppa have finally pivoted toward the most vital part of the story—one that tests Mark’s resolve and offers Nolan a redemptive path—the early-season sluggishness remains a hindrance. Whether they can nail the landing and prime the show for a stellar fifth season remains to be seen.

I’ll be right there for the finale. It’s impossible not to be.
