Emily Saliers, one half of the iconic folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, has opened up about a challenging health journey. Alongside her musical partner Amy Ray, Saliers revealed that she is managing two incurable medical conditions that are significantly impacting her vocal capabilities as the band prepares for their upcoming tour.
In a heartfelt video update shared via the band’s Instagram, Saliers explained that she wanted to be fully transparent with fans regarding her diagnosis of cervical dystonia—a neurological disorder causing involuntary muscle contractions—and essential tremor, which affects her nervous system. “I’ve lived with these conditions for a while now, and unfortunately, they tend to progress over time,” she shared during tour rehearsals.
Saliers described the physical toll these disorders have taken on her artistry. “Cervical dystonia causes my head to tilt and misalign, which is inherently problematic for my vocal structure. Meanwhile, the essential tremor affects my larynx, jaw, and diaphragm. It has introduced an involuntary vibrato that makes it impossible for me to sustain the clear, straight tones that have defined our harmonies for decades.”
Despite these physical hurdles, the Indigo Girls are moving forward with their extensive U.S. tour, which begins this week in Athens, Ohio. Saliers is currently undergoing a comprehensive treatment plan, including physical therapy, acupuncture, specialized vocal coaching, and Botox treatments to help mitigate the symptoms.
“I am devastated that my voice has changed,” Saliers admitted, “but Amy has been an incredible support. We are working hard to ensure our live performances remain as powerful as ever, utilizing modern audio technology to help bridge the gap where my physical control has faltered.”
The announcement has sparked an outpouring of love from the music community. Peers like Brandi Carlile and Jennifer Nettles praised Saliers for her vulnerability. Carlile noted, “Being an Indigo Girls fan is a lifelong privilege. Emily, if you want to sing, we will be there singing right along with you. We know every word.”
