IGN Presents Top 10 Licensed Games — X‑Men Origins: Wolverine Misses the Top Ten, but There’s a Good Reason

The video-game adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. was predictably named the worst.

Recently, IGN’s writers put together a roundup of games based on licensed properties. The selection features a recent title from MachineGames, a Rockstar classic, several Star Wars entries, and others.

Their final top-10 omitted X-Men Origins: Wolverine, although the game was still singled out separately.

The journalists justified this by arguing the game is markedly better than the original source:

Every so often we find games that surpass the films they’re adapted from. A few such examples appear on our list: The Warriors, GoldenEye, and Escape from Butcher Bay all make strong cases. There’s one title that didn’t make our top ten but deserves a shout-out: 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. […] In that game, the playable Wolverine is arguably the best portrayal yet—at least until Insomniac attempted to claim that crown in 2026. He leaps, slices, and decapitates with the ferocity you expect from a clawed adamantium savage. The game isn’t a masterpiece, but for a time—before the Batman: Arkham series arrived—it stood as the most compelling example of a superhero action game in years and was ten times more entertaining than the movie that inspired it.
