How the War Plans System Works in Diablo 4

In the challenging endgame of Diablo 4, the War Plan system acts as your essential strategic tool for conquering Sanctuary.

Once you’ve wrapped up the campaign, your focus shifts to optimizing your build and pushing through the Torment ranks. Advancing toward Torment XII is a grueling process that demands a formidable character. To secure superior gear and boost your Paragon standing, you must master endgame staples like Helltides, the Pit, and Nightmare Dungeons.

To maximize your efficiency and guarantee high-quality rewards for your efforts, constructing a structured War Plan is vital. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to unlock and utilize the War Plan system in Diablo 4.

Unlocking Your War Plan

There are two primary requirements to access the War Plan system: you must own the Lord of Hatred expansion and complete its narrative campaign. The feature becomes available the moment you conclude the final cutscene and return to Temis.

To get started, head to Temis in Skovos and interact with the command table located beside Tyrael. Because this is a localized system, you must visit this specific city to manage your plans. For convenience, use the “Visit Tyrael” button found in the bottom-left corner of your map to teleport directly there.

Think of the War Plan as a personalized itinerary designed to curate your endgame progression. Through this interface, you select a specific sequence of objectives from a generated list, spanning the game’s seven major endgame pillars: Tree of Whispers, Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide, The Undercity, Lair Bosses, Internal Hordes, and the Pit.

The interface functions like a branching web where every node represents a distinct activity. Each selection may lead to two subsequent options, which can eventually funnel into a single path. This structure forces you to blend your preferred content with mandatory objectives. For instance, prioritizing a Nightmare Dungeon might naturally steer your next available node toward a Helltide.

Beyond personal preference, strategy is key. Completing a plan rewards you with activity experience and loot, but specific nodes provide bonus rewards. A Nightmare Dungeon node, for example, might grant a significant surplus of armor upon completing the entire sequence. Note that all rewards are granted only after the full War Plan has been executed.

Once you’ve finalized your selection, you must formally confirm the plan. You are then required to complete these activities in the exact order established. If your itinerary lists the Pit followed by an Undercity run, the system will not register progress if you deviate from that sequence.

You don’t need to memorize the path; your active War Plan is always visible in the bottom-left corner of the map menu, complete with a convenient button to teleport to your next destination.

If you aren’t satisfied with your current options or wish to pivot your strategy, you can generate a new plan at the command table. Be aware, however, that resetting or rerolling a plan requires a Mark of El’Druin, a specialized currency earned specifically through completing War Plans.

As you cycle through these activities, you will improve their corresponding categories, each featuring a unique skill tree that enhances the content with more enemies and better loot. Investing skill points into these trees raises your command table rank, which in turn unlocks more extensive War Plans and provides a broader range of options when designing your route.
