Hellboy Returns This Fall in Darkest Saga Yet from Original Creator
A fresh chapter in the underworld saga of Hellboy is set to arrive this autumn. Dark Horse Comics confirmed on Thursday that Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, a highly anticipated two-part limited series, will see creator Mike Mignola returning to his seminal supernatural realm.
Picking up after the events of the eighth issue of the original Hellboy in Hell run, this new narrative finds our favorite red-skinned hero attempting to rescue a young woman amidst the chaos of a burgeoning demonic insurrection. According to the official press release, Hellboy’s noble intervention quickly reveals that neither the situation nor the individuals involved are quite what they appear to be.
The original Hellboy in Hell series concluded in 2016 following a celebrated four-year stint, picking up where the Hellboy: The Fury storyline left off. While Mignola personally illustrated all 10 issues of that series, this latest endeavor marks a shift in artistic approach. French illustrator Cyrille Pomès is stepping in to helm the visual duties for this two-issue event, marking his official debut in American comics. Below, you can find a glimpse of his debut cover alongside an evocative variant by Mignola himself.
“I’ll admit, I considered the Hellboy in Hell narrative a closed chapter. However, after stumbling upon Cyrille Pomès’ work, I was immediately captivated,” Mignola shared. “We connected, and when he expressed an interest in tackling a Hellboy project, the decision was easy. I still had a fragment of a story lingering in my mind, so I invited him to flesh it out. The result is a genuine creative collaboration, anchored by his breathtaking art and masterful visual storytelling.”
Reflecting on the partnership, Pomès noted that Mignola’s early work was a foundational influence during his teenage years. “I’ve watched his evolution with constant awe,” Pomès remarked. When they finally met, he seized the opportunity to ask if Mignola might pen a script for him to illustrate. “His answer has stayed with me ever since: ‘It would be an honor.'”
Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #1 debuts on October 7. The creative team will be further bolstered by the legendary Dave Stewart on colors, with a variant cover for the second issue provided by Marc Riou.
