GreedFall II Disappoints Critics and Hits Nacon’s Plans

The launch of GreedFall 2: The Dying World was intended to be a saving grace for French publisher Nacon. However, initial reviews suggest quite the opposite.

Instead of becoming a major breakthrough, the title has debuted with a Metacritic average of around 65. This is significantly lower than the performance of its 2019 predecessor. For a publisher currently navigating market turbulence, these results are a major setback. The company had pinned its hopes on a success that would have solidified the reputation of the Spiders studio.

Critics have pointed out numerous issues that appear to be lingering side effects of a turbulent Early Access period. The primary grievance is the sluggish narrative pacing; the prologue is being described as tedious, which often leads to a drop-off in player interest right at the start. Reviewers also highlight technical instability, various bugs, and polarizing adjustments to the combat system, which many find cumbersome and over-engineered.

Some outlets, including Gameliner, have gone as far as labeling the game’s current state a “disaster,” citing one-dimensional characters and a lack of narrative depth.

Despite these flaws, the essence of a classic RPG still lingers beneath the surface. Long-time fans may be drawn to elements reminiscent of Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Once past the labored introduction, players can find the signature Spiders touch: political intrigue, an imaginative world, and complex character dynamics. However, as critics have noted, the studio may have “bitten off more than it could chew.”
