The legendary Kaiju of the Godzilla mythos are set to invade the high-speed world of the Blue Blur in IDW Publishing’s upcoming crossover event, Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla. To celebrate the announcement, fans can already feast their eyes on seven striking variant covers for the debut issue.
As reported by IGN, the series brings together Nick Marino—the writer behind Godzilla Rivals—with artist Jack Lawrence and colorist Reggie Graham. This creative powerhouse is crafting an exclusive limited series where Sonic and the King of the Monsters finally meet head-to-head.
IDW, which manages the comic book licenses for both franchises, decided that the time was ripe for a monumental collision. Marino noted that this specific crossover has been one of the most frequently requested mashups among both fanbases.
Unlike the recent DC crossover that spanned multiple dimensions, Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla will see the colossal titans rampaging directly through Sonic’s home world, with titanic battles unfolding across the series’ most iconic locations.
Marino is drawing inspiration from various lore, citing Sonic Adventure’s Station Square and classic films like Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla as key creative touchstones for the project.
Alongside the reveal, IDW showcased seven variant covers for the first issue, featuring the artistic talents of Jack Lawrence, Mauro Fonseca, Min Ho Kim, Clayton Crain, Mico Suayan, Natalie Haines, Reggie Graham, and Miles Ark.
The artwork highlights Godzilla, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla as the primary threats, pitted against Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and the nefarious Dr. Eggman. The first issue of Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla is slated for release in the summer of 2026.
