EA Could Sell Mass Effect After BioWare Closure, Former Producer Says
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah believes the studio’s closure makes it more likely that Electronic Arts will sell the rights to Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and other BioWare series. He does not expect EA to move on this anytime soon.
Remember, BioWare is 100% owned by EA. EA owns all of the franchises. It owns Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Jade Empire. […] Now nobody at EA is working on BioWare games, and most likely nobody will. That could raise the likelihood of the rights being sold, although the company may simply try to forget about these series and tuck them away in an archive.
According to Darrah, EA is currently focused on cutting costs rather than finding new sources of revenue. After the company was acquired by an investor consortium for $55 billion, it took on a significant debt load. He says it will likely start by optimizing costs.
Later, EA may consider selling unused franchises, including Command & Conquer and Dungeon Keeper. Mass Effect, however, could stay with EA and be licensed to outside studios. Amazon MGM Studios’ plans for a Mass Effect adaptation reportedly remain on track.
