Amazon's Mass Effect TV series reportedly still in production despite the BioWare closure

EA has closed the celebrated RPG studio BioWare this week. The closure also ended development of the fifth Mass Effect game. According to a report from IGN, Amazon Prime’s upcoming Mass Effect television adaptation is still moving forward as planned.

Amazon MGM Studios first began work on a Mass Effect series in 2024. Executive producer Mike Gamble said then that the show wouldn’t simply retell the games. He explained, “The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all… that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”

With the studio gone, you might expect the project to collapse. However, IGN spoke with sources at Prime Video who said it is still in development and that the whole creative team remains attached. That group includes showrunners Doug Jung (The Cloverfield Paradox, Star Trek Beyond) and Daniel Casey (F9: The Fast Saga, Wardriver). It also includes former Marvel Studios head Avi Arad and Jessica Jones executive producer Karim Zreik. Gamble was involved as well, and the report implies he still is. It’s unclear how his role may change now that BioWare is gone, since he acted as the studio’s guiding voice on the project. The series has no release window yet.

The Mass Effect series joins several other video game adaptations Amazon has in the pipeline:
