While Sony Santa Monica recently confirmed that remakes of the classic God of War trilogy are currently in development, a considerable wait remains before those legendary titles reach modern hardware. To bridge the gap, Sony has unexpectedly launched God of War: Sons of Sparta today.
This unique project was developed by Mega Cat Studios—a team primarily recognized for its portfolio of retro-inspired sports titles—in close collaboration with the architects of the series at Santa Monica Studio.
Sons of Sparta departs from the series’ usual cinematic scale in favor of a 2D, pixel-art action experience. The narrative follows a youthful Kratos and his brother, Deimos, as they navigate their formative years. According to the official description, the duo must “survive trials that push their combat training to the limit while grappling with the profound burdens of honor and brotherhood.”
This isn’t the franchise’s first foray into Kratos’ past or the world of 2D aesthetics. The PSP’s Ghost of Sparta previously explored the relationship between the two brothers, and 2007’s God of War: Betrayal brought a pixelated version of the Ghost of Sparta to mobile devices long before the smartphone era. However, Sons of Sparta distinguishes itself by serving as the earliest chronological chapter in Kratos’ storied timeline to date.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is available now exclusively on PlayStation 5.
