The Ghost of Sparta has found a new form. Amazon’s Prime Video officially announced on Wednesday that Ryan Hurst, celebrated for his standout performances in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, will step into the iconic role of Kratos for the upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War. The streaming platform has already demonstrated significant confidence in the project, granting it a two-season order ahead of production.
Hurst is a familiar name to the franchise’s dedicated community; he provided the voice and motion capture for the formidable Norse god Thor in 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. His portrayal of the God of Thunder was met with critical acclaim, earning him a prestigious BAFTA Award nomination. While the titular role is filled, casting for other pivotal characters like Atreus, Mimir, and Freya remains a mystery.

Hurst follows in the footsteps of legendary performers. Christopher Judge voiced the modern, more weathered iteration of Kratos in the 2018 soft reboot by Santa Monica Studio, taking the mantle from Terrence “T.C.” Carson, who defined the character during the franchise’s original Greek era. According to Prime Video’s official character description, this version of Kratos will honor the depth established in the recent games:
A Spartan by birth and a god by nature, Kratos is a warrior forged in the fires of a martial culture. After a tragic pact with Ares, the Greek God of War, cost him his soul, he embarked on a path of destruction that saw him topple mortals and deities alike. Now a pop-culture icon defined by his stoic resolve and harrowing past, the live-action series will follow Kratos as he navigates the complexities of fatherhood with his ten-year-old son, Atreus. This evolving bond serves as the emotional core of the narrative.
The television adaptation will specifically focus on the Norse chapter of the saga. The story follows Kratos and Atreus as they trek across the perilous nine realms to fulfill the final request of Kratos’ late wife, Faye: to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in existence. Throughout their journey, Kratos struggles to conceal his violent divinity from his son while clashing with the volatile gods of the North.
Behind the scenes, the series is bolstered by veteran talent. Ronald D. Moore, the creative force behind Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, serves as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Direction for the first two episodes will be handled by Frederick E.O. Toye, whose recent credits include the critically acclaimed Shōgun and Fallout. The series is a high-profile co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
Fans can expect God of War to make its grand debut on Prime Video in 2027.
