During the latest PlayStation State of Play broadcast, Sony delivered a double dose of nostalgia for fans of the Ghost of Sparta. Headlining the event was the official confirmation that the original God of War trilogy is being completely remade for modern hardware. Furthermore, Santa Monica Studio surprised the audience by shadow-dropping a brand-new 2D prequel titled God of War: Son of Sparta, which is available to play right now.
The franchise commanded the spotlight as the showcase’s grand finale. While the announcement of the trilogy remakes generated immense hype, Sony was careful to manage expectations; the reveal was limited to a logo, with no gameplay footage or release window provided. According to official statements, the project is still in its “nascent stages” of development, suggesting that the return to Kratos’ Greek origins is still several years away.
In contrast to the long-term wait for the trilogy, God of War: Son of Sparta made a surprise debut today. Developed by the retro-specialists at Mega Cat Studios, this 2D action title serves as a narrative prequel focusing on Kratos’ younger years. Fans of the 2018 soft reboot may recall Kratos’ poignant stories regarding his Spartan comrade, Atreus—the man who would eventually become his son’s namesake. This new adventure aims to explore that legendary friendship through fast-paced side-scrolling combat. Bolstering the nostalgia is the return of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos, who provides the game’s narration. Players can pick up the standard edition for $30 or opt for the digital deluxe version at $40.
These reveals finally put to rest rumors that have been circulating for a significant amount of time. Speculation regarding a potential trilogy restoration first gained momentum nearly two years ago, while leaks suggesting a 2D spin-off began surfacing last March.
While the ambitious remakes of the original trilogy remain on the distant horizon, God of War: Son of Sparta is currently available for download on the PlayStation 5.
