The retail chain released an official statement—playful in tone but rich in symbolism—declaring an “end to hostilities” between fans after the announcement that Halo: Campaign Evolved will arrive on PlayStation 5 in 2026 with support for cross-platform multiplayer.
For a franchise that has lived in gamers’ hearts for more than 20 years, this is a significant milestone: a title once exclusive to Xbox now represents a more open, interconnected industry. In its note, GameStop briefly outlined the “history of the feud” that began in the early 2000s, when Halo: Combat Evolved ignited the rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation communities.
“Considering that for two decades the global gaming community has been caught up in a persistent, petty conflict known as the console war, and given that Halo: Campaign Evolved will appear on the PS5 with cross-platform play, GameStop, acting as a neutral arbiter, officially declares the console war over.”
Players are encouraged to “stand down, disband their armies” and step into a “new era of cooperative gaming,” while GameStop proclaims itself a “demilitarized zone” ready to provide hardware, accessories, and promotions to “former combatants” from all platforms. The message concludes with the company’s slogan: “Power to the Players.”
