If you have ever yearned to embrace the life of a rugged frontiersman and carve out a legacy in the wilderness, The Legend of California is designed to fulfill that fantasy. This upcoming indie title is a multiplayer action-survival FPS developed by Kintsugiyama and published by Dreamhaven—the gaming venture established by former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. Notably, the project is spearheaded by a figure iconic to the Overwatch community: Jeff Kaplan.

Kaplan, a key architect behind the success of World of Warcraft and the former lead director of Overwatch, transitioned away from Blizzard in 2021. Despite his multi-year hiatus from the spotlight, the overwhelming enthusiasm found in the comment sections of the game’s teaser trailer proves that his influence on the industry has fostered a deeply loyal following.

This Western-inspired multiplayer experience is set upon a mythical interpretation of California during the height of the Gold Rush. Players are dropped into an expansive environment where they must hunt, gather, and fight to survive while building prosperous settlements. Whether players prefer the solitude of a lone wanderer or the strength of a cooperative community, the game offers the flexibility to forge a unique destiny.

Early footage showcases a compelling gameplay loop that balances intense shootouts with the meticulous management of resources. By allowing players to extract minerals from mines to construct personalized homesteads, The Legend of California strikes an evocative chord between the atmospheric exploration of Red Dead Redemption and the structural grit of the Mafia series.

“Our team coalesced around a singular vision: The Legend of California,” the developers stated on the official Kintsugiyama website. “While we have spent four years in development and still have much work ahead of us, we are thrilled to finally pull back the curtain on the world we are creating.”

The Legend of California is scheduled to launch into Early Access on PC in 2026.
