The debut trailer for Jane Schoenbrun’s highly anticipated horror-comedy, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, has arrived, offering a surreal glimpse into the director’s subversive take on the summer camp slasher. While the teaser remains enigmatic regarding specific plot points, it masterfully juxtaposes the visceral gore reminiscent of Friday the 13th with a haunting, Lynchian atmosphere. The result is a stylistic fusion that feels both startlingly original and deeply rooted in the DNA of genre cinema.
Schoenbrun, who previously garnered critical acclaim for the internet-inspired thriller We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and the evocative psychological horror I Saw the TV Glow, continues her fascination with the intersections of adolescence, identity, and the macabre.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma marks a new chapter for the filmmaker, featuring an ensemble of established stars including Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. The narrative centers on a queer director (Einbinder) tasked with helming a reboot of a fictional legacy slasher franchise. In a meta-textual twist, she becomes obsessed with casting the original film’s reclusive “final girl,” played by Anderson. From the looks of the trailer, the production soon devolves into a provocative blend of eroticism and bloodshed.
Reflecting on the project in a statement released last year, Schoenbrun described the film as a tribute to the "sleepover classics" of yesteryear.
“I strive to create the movies I longed for as a child,” Schoenbrun remarked. “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is my definitive attempt at a midnight odyssey—the kind of cozy yet deranged masterpiece that would beckon to an unsuspecting viewer from the dusty shelves of a local video store.”
The film boasts a robust supporting cast, including Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon), Eva Victor, Zach Cherry (Severance), Sarah Sherman (SNL), Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown (Yellowjackets), Quintessa Swindell, and Kevin McDonald. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is set to premiere in theaters on August 7, 2026.
