Activists Say PlayStation Boycott Will Be Indefinite Until Sony Admits Mistake

Organizers of the “#PSBlackout” movement have turned their protest into an open-ended campaign, rejecting calls from Call of Duty fans who asked to delay the action around the shooter’s beta period.

Sony announced earlier this summer that it would move away from PlayStation game discs. The decision sparked backlash among console owners, who launched the “#PSBlackout” campaign to convince company leadership to keep physical media.

Organizers initially structured the boycott as a weeklong event from August 23 to August 30. That approach drew criticism across the community, where players argued that setting a fixed end date undermined the very definition and leverage of a boycott.

Does It Play, one of the primary organizers behind the campaign, published an updated plan making the action indefinite until Sony leadership changes course:

We want physical copies of games to stay! An all-digital future without ownership or legal consumer protection is unacceptable! Go offline, do not play, do not buy anything, and cancel [PlayStation Plus] subscriptions until Sony realizes its mistake!

One prominent response under the organizer’s post asked if the boycott could be postponed for a week because the user was enjoying the Call of Duty beta. Does It Play responded concisely, stating that creating that disruption was the entire point of the protest.

Players who pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 currently have access to the beta, with an open beta scheduled to follow shortly. The series maintains a massive audience on PlayStation, meaning the boycott’s timing could create a measurable dip in online activity if organizers succeed in convincing shooter fans to participate.
