Film.ru and the Moscow Film School announce a video essay competition

Often, the most compelling cinematic works slip under the radar, despite boasting exceptional direction, masterful screenwriting, and a unique perspective on the world.

In partnership with the Moscow Film School (MFS), we are launching a video essay competition dedicated to those hidden gems—films you believe are significant, underappreciated, and deserving of a wider conversation.

To participate, create a 1–3 minute video essay highlighting a film that lacked mainstream attention but is undoubtedly worth watching.

The competition is open to everyone. Entries will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of film critics, MFS faculty, and the Film.ru editorial team, including Vladimir Lyashchenko, Vsevolod Korshunov, Nastasya Gorbachevskaya, and Naya Guseva.

The grand prize includes a spot in the MFS “Practical Film Criticism” course (subject to admission requirements), a personal critique of your work by Vladimir Lyashchenko, and the publication of your video essay on Film.ru.

Submissions are open until August 21, 11:59 PM. For full submission guidelines, please visit our website. Winners will be announced on August 28.
