Felicia Day has never been one for creative stagnation. While widely recognized for her roles in cult-classic hits like Supernatural, Eureka, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the multidisciplinary artist has constantly pivoted across mediums as an actor, author, producer, and digital pioneer. Her latest endeavor, The Lost Daughter of Sparta, marks her debut in the graphic novel space, breathing new life into a forgotten figure from Greek mythology.
However, amidst her current literary tour, Day is also orchestrating a sentimental homecoming. She is officially developing a feature-film revival of The Guild, the seminal 2007-2013 web series that helped define modern digital geek culture, set two decades after the original story began.
The contemporary landscape of actual-play juggernauts like Critical Role and Dimension 20 owes a significant debt to The Guild. In fact, Critical Role found its initial footing on Day’s Geek and Sundry platform. As an early vanguard of fan-funded media and gamer-centric storytelling, The Guild established the proof-of-concept for the billion-dollar gaming entertainment industry that exists today.
Day, who served as the show’s primary architect and starred as Cyd Sherman (known online as Codex), centered the series on a group of MMORPG enthusiasts whose digital camaraderie is tested by the complexities of reality. Across six seasons, the show amassed over 300 million views and expanded into music videos and comics. Now, a reunion film is on the horizon, with a Kickstarter campaign slated for this summer.
“We’ve secured the entire original cast, and our recent table read was an emotional milestone,” Day shared with Polygon. “Hearing everyone inhabit those characters again was overwhelming. We fell right back into that familiar bickering—it felt exactly like our last day on set. It’s the authentic experience fans have been waiting for.”
While she remains tight-lipped regarding the specific narrative, Day confirmed the timeline. “I won’t reveal the plot just yet, but the Kickstarter announcement is only weeks away. We’re aiming for a summer launch to get production underway, especially with our 20th anniversary approaching next year.”
Given the massive success of shows like Dimension 20 selling out Madison Square Garden, Day likely could have pursued traditional studio backing. However, she found that path incompatible with her vision.
“I’m acutely aware that the story I want to tell might not align with corporate priorities. Studios often want to sanitize or alter narratives for the wrong reasons. Maintaining the independent autonomy I had during the original series is non-negotiable. I want the audience to be our partners in this—that’s the essence of The Guild.”
For Day, the allure of crowdfunding lies in the “authenticity” of the fan relationship, a connection she often finds missing in the high-walled world of traditional entertainment.
“There is often a cold, artificial barrier in mainstream media—a glass wall between the creator and the viewer,” she explained. “Breaking that barrier makes the audience feel like family. I’ve seen the impact of that through characters like Charlie in Supernatural or Holly Marten in Eureka. When a fan tells me that Codex helped them embrace their gamer identity, or that Charlie gave them the courage to come out to their family, it underscores why this work matters.”
Despite pitching numerous projects to major networks, Day noted that her specific brand of storytelling frequently fails to resonate with standard industry paradigms—a reality she has come to accept.
“I’m reviving The Guild as a movie because it allows me to tell this story on my own terms,” Day concluded. “By involving the fans, they become part of the world-building process. I don’t want to create in a vacuum; I want to build things alongside the people who love them. Once my book tour concludes, my focus will be entirely on The Guild.”
The script is currently undergoing final refinements following the initial table read, with more updates expected as the summer campaign draws near.
