Building on the momentum of last year’s 60 FPS patch for Far Cry 4, Ubisoft is extending the same performance courtesy to three more franchise staples. This week, Far Cry 3: Classic Edition, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, and Far Cry Primal are all set to receive a significant smoothness upgrade on current-generation hardware.
The developer teased the news through an enigmatic post on X, utilizing a series of emoji-based equations to reveal the titles and their impending frame rate boost. These updates are scheduled to arrive this Wednesday, January 21, specifically targeting players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While promotional trailers highlight the enhanced fluidity of the Far Cry 3 entries, it is worth noting that the update focuses strictly on performance; do not expect a comprehensive graphical overhaul. Even so, the transition to 60 FPS provides a much-welcomed refinement for these legacy experiences.
To clarify, the performance patch applies to the “Classic Editions” of Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon—the updated ports that debuted on last-gen consoles in 2018 and 2021. Meanwhile, Far Cry Primal remains the original 2016 release, now optimized for modern systems.
As you prepare to return to the Rook Islands or the prehistoric wilds of Oros, you can brush up on our original critiques of Far Cry 3, the neon-soaked Blood Dragon, and the survival-focused Primal. Furthermore, the franchise is expanding beyond the digital realm, with a live-action Far Cry anthology series currently in production at FX.
