An enthusiast has updated a classic gaming experience using modern technology.

An early PC build of Gamma Emerald was recently released. The fan-made project serves as an unofficial remake of one of the Pokemon franchise’s classic entries.

Built on a modern game engine, this new version of Pokemon Emerald retains the original plot, characters, and events, though developer undreamedpanic stated that everything has been “slightly updated.” The remake includes day-and-night cycles, real-time lighting, move teaching, and various surprises hidden across the world map. It also introduces a berry-growing system tied to real-world time that operates on an eight-hour timer.

Running Gamma Emerald requires an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card and recommends 16 GB of RAM, with a minimum of 8 GB needed “for optimal performance.” The game requires 5 GB of storage space.

Gamma Emerald is available through itch.io. The creator noted that the current early version offers between three and six hours of playtime, with plans to expand the project and resolve technical issues over time.
