How Did Shrek 2 Remastered Leak?

With Shrek 5 now less than a year from release, DreamWorks’ best-known ogre is heading back to video games. Shrek and his pals joined the roster of Brawlhalla earlier this year. Now a remaster of the beloved Shrek 2 tie-in game has surfaced, thanks to an early Xbox Store listing.

The first sign that a Shrek 2 Remastered might be in development came in September, when its Steam Achievements leaked. Achievements for Kingdom Hearts 4 were exposed at about the same time. Then, on October 16, GameSpot spotted an Xbox.com store page for Shrek 2 Remastered. The page revealed details about the game and even included its announcement trailer.

Xbox Store leaks happen more often than you might expect. This year alone, the console port of Mewgenics and Rayman Origins Enhanced Edition were both revealed early the same way. I spent a lot of my childhood playing Shrek 2: The Game, so this may be the most exciting Xbox Store leak of the year for me.

Luxoflux developed Shrek 2 and Activision published it in 2004. It loosely adapts the film’s story as an isometric action-adventure. It was hardly the most groundbreaking licensed game ever made. Still, it was far more polished and enjoyable than most movie tie-ins of its day, including other Shrek games. I still remember it fondly, and I’m glad a new generation of kids will get to play it.

According to the store page, which has since been deleted, Apsyr is handling the remaster. The studio’s track record is mixed. It has released many flawed remasters of retro Star Wars games, though its more recent re-releases of The Lord of the Rings games have fared better. Shrek 2 Remastered will give the original Xbox, PS2, and GameCube game the expected visual overhaul. It will also add a photo mode and a cheat mode.

The leak didn’t confirm a release window, and we still don’t know when the game will be officially announced. Even so, the remaster will most likely arrive before Shrek 5 reaches theaters on June 30, 2027.
