Zohran Mamdani, who first garnered political prominence by mastering the nuances of social media, is now leveraging cutting-edge technology to foster deeper connections with both his local constituents and the national audience.
Polygon has confirmed that Mayor Mamdani is set to debut a new streaming series, “Talk with the People,” on May 21 at 4 p.m. While the broadcast will be simulcast across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, the series will call Twitch—a platform that has evolved far beyond its gaming roots into a hub for political discourse—its primary home. During each stream, the Mayor will address public inquiries in real-time via the chat.
“By launching ‘Talk with the People,’ we are meeting New Yorkers exactly where they are,” Mayor Mamdani stated. “This initiative represents the nation’s first recurring, cross-platform series hosted by an elected official. By answering questions live on Twitch, we are establishing a transparent, direct line of communication between City Hall and the public, ensuring that younger generations—who have frequently been sidelined—have a voice.”
While the initiative draws inevitable parallels to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s iconic “Fireside Chats,” the series draws its inspiration from the legendary Mayor LaGuardia. During the 1940s, LaGuardia utilized the radio show “Talk to the People” as a pioneering tool to bypass traditional media intermediaries and engage directly with the residents of New York City.
Mayor Mamdani is modernizing this legacy by shifting the dynamic from simply talking to the public to engaging with them. One can only hope he is prepared for the unique vernacular of Twitch culture. For the record, Zohran: should you see this image pop up in the chat, rest assured—it’s a positive sign.
