Evangelion Returns with a New Anime — NieR: Automata Creator Yoko Taro to Write the Script

The legendary franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary with the return of a new project led by a startlingly unconventional creative team.

Production for a brand-new anime series set within the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” universe has officially commenced. The announcement was made on February 23 during the closing ceremony of a festival dedicated to the franchise’s landmark 30th anniversary.

Much of the excitement stems from the project’s unique creative lineup. Scriptwriting and series composition have been entrusted to Yoko Taro—the visionary mastermind behind the NieR and Drakengard series—who is widely celebrated for his experimental and subversive approach to narrative.

The series will be co-directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toru Yatabe. Tsurumaki is a foundational figure in the franchise’s history, having served as a key creator for The End of Evangelion and the entire Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy. His involvement ensures the project remains deeply rooted in the original team’s creative DNA. Meanwhile, Yatabe brings fresh perspective to the table, having previously contributed to the high-octane animation of Chainsaw Man.

The score will be composed by Keiichi Okabe, the renowned musician famous for the hauntingly beautiful soundtracks of NieR: Automata and the Tekken series. On the production side, Studio Khara—the house that produced the Rebuild films—will collaborate with CloverWorks. The latter is well-known for major hits such as Spy × Family, Darling in the Franxx, and Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia.

Specific plot details, the series format, and an official release date remain under wraps for now. As of this announcement, no teaser trailers or projected premiere windows have been disclosed.
