In a surprise announcement during the Rocket League Paris Major this weekend, Epic Games unveiled Unreal Engine 6. The reveal was punctuated by a striking teaser trailer offering a glimpse into the potential future of the beloved vehicular soccer franchise.
The footage showcased high-fidelity, real-time gameplay featuring iconic Rocket League vehicles rendered within the new Unreal Engine 6 framework. Currently, it remains ambiguous whether this preview points toward an entirely new standalone sequel or a significant overhaul for the original 2015 title, which currently operates on the aging Unreal Engine 3. Epic Games has yet to provide further technical documentation or a formal roadmap for the engine’s capabilities.
The debut of Unreal Engine 6 arrives six years after the initial reveal of Unreal Engine 5 in 2020 and its subsequent release in 2022. As Unreal Engine 5 has solidified itself as the industry standard for contemporary AAA development, the bar is set incredibly high for its successor. While a release date for Unreal Engine 6 has not been announced, we can likely expect a series of in-depth technical demonstrations over the coming months as the platform edges closer to public availability.
