Nier Replicant mod adds the remaster’s biggest missing feature

When Square Enix originally launched Nier back in 2010, the action-RPG debuted in two distinct iterations. Nier Replicant was a PlayStation 3 exclusive in Japan, featuring a youthful protagonist affectionately known as Brother Nier. Meanwhile, Nier Gestalt launched on the Xbox 360 in Japan, swapping the younger lead for a grittier, older protagonist recognized as Father Nier. Aside from the protagonist’s age and his familial bond with Yonah—acting as either a brother or a father—the overarching narrative and mechanics remained entirely identical.

<p>International markets exclusively received the <em>Gestalt</em> edition. However, when Square Enix rolled out the modern remaster, <em>Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139</em>, in 2021, Brother Nier stood as the sole playable hero. Fortunately, thanks to the impressive dedication of a skilled modder, the cult-classic RPG's hardened alternate protagonist has made a triumphant return. On July 30, community creator Elevna unveiled version 1.0 of <a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/nierreplicant/mods/111" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Nier Gestalt ver.1.22474487139</a>, seamlessly bringing Father Nier back into the spotlight.</p>

<p>Merely swapping out character models across the entire campaign would already be an impressive feat, but Elevna’s creation goes far beyond surface-level changes to recreate the authentic <em>Gestalt</em> atmosphere. The overhaul faithfully reconstructs nearly all of Father Nier's alternate outfits, featuring tailored character models designed specifically to match various story beats and gameplay moments. Furthermore, Elevna successfully integrated the original voice acting from the classic <em>Gestalt</em> release directly into the 2021 remaster.</p>

<p>The modification also introduces thoughtful adjustments to help Father Nier blend effortlessly into content unique to the remaster. This includes newly recorded and adapted voice lines tailored for Route E. Additionally, the <em>World of Recycled Vessel</em> DLC—packaged natively within the remaster—has been cleverly modified to reflect the older protagonist. In the original <em>Replicant</em> version of this expansion, players controlled the younger brother, a dynamic that previously made this DLC the sole official appearance of Father Nier in the 2021 game. To preserve both experiences, the mod thoughtfully flips the script, making Brother Nier playable exclusively during the <em>World of Recycled Vessel</em> sequences.</p>
