Epic Games Is Basically Teasing Fans Now With Its New $50K AI Game Contest
Epic Games has moved past simply urging its own developers to embrace artificial intelligence. Now it is recruiting players to join the Epic AI MegaJam, a game development contest built around AI. Entrants are invited to use AI tools to build a game in Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Epic bills the event as a celebration of creativity, but it is another contentious decision, and it increasingly looks like the company is throwing gasoline on an already blazing fire.
The AI MegaJam runs from Nov. 12 to Nov. 15. Over those three days, contestants get unlimited access to AI tools, and the team that builds the best game takes home $50,000. Under the official rules, entrants may use assets they didn’t create themselves, provided they hold a license for them. They may also use AI to write code and to generate assets, audio, video, and text. Teams keep the legal rights to what they submit and are free to use it however they like once the contest ends.
According to the FAQ, participants aren’t required to use AI at all. It would be wonderful to see an entirely human team come out on top, but with only three days on the clock, building and submitting a finished game without AI would be extraordinarily difficult. Epic knows that perfectly well.
Epic is leaning on AI to accelerate game development

To announce the event, the official Unreal Engine account on X shared a sign-up link along with a meme. The image shows two hands. One has six fingers and holds a red pill labeled “ship awesome games in a weekend.” The other has five fingers and holds a blue pill labeled “wait months to prototype.” The framing of the red pill implies that Epic accepts AI won’t produce a flawless result, but argues it can deliver one far faster. The blue pill, meanwhile, represents a comfortable status quo that keeps development slow.

Between this post and a string of recent decisions, it is plain that Epic Games is becoming an AI-first company. Developers have reportedly been told to stop writing code by hand and rely on AI tools instead. Epic even took pride in announcing that its new store launcher was vibe coded, explaining that “programming is hard.”
CEO Tim Sweeney has also used social media to champion AI in video games, predicting a “golden age of gaming.” His views increasingly echo those of Elon Musk, the billionaire and enthusiastic AI booster. Musk wants to establish AI as a permanent part of game development, with the aim of refining the technology until it can produce games on its own.
