Epic Games CEO explains why new multiplayer games are failing and suggests developers use Unreal Engine 6

Epic Games aims to help developers build audiences for their projects.

Many multiplayer games fail because they struggle to attract enough players. In a recent interview with Inven Global, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney discussed why these launches often fall short.

Players prefer sticking with their existing groups of friends. Sweeney noted that moving an established social group from one game to a new title remains nearly impossible. Rare exceptions exist, but they are outliers.

Sweeney proposed a solution integrated into Unreal Engine 6. The company is developing cross-game social features. These tools will allow users to form voice chat groups with friends from one game while playing another, making it easier to invite them to a new project.

Sweeney also mentioned the potential for transferring rare items between games. He believes this functionality would provide an economic incentive for players to try new releases.

Epic Games expects these social and economic connections to define the architecture of Unreal Engine 6. These features should help developers build more efficient games and increase player retention, improving the odds of a global hit.
