Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson continues to redefine the modern multihyphenate status. Beyond box-office dominance and athletic prowess, the charismatic entertainer is now leaning into his musical side, showcasing a surprising vulnerability with his tender new pop ballad.

Known primarily for blockbuster action spectacles and family-friendly cinematic hits, the imposing star is officially expanding his creative footprint into the recording industry. His heartfelt girl-dad anthem, “Your Dad,” serves as a standout track on the upcoming companion album Moana: Voices Across the Ocean, which accompanies the highly anticipated live-action adaptation.

“My whole life changed / From the moment I held you in my heart I knew / That life would never be the same,” Johnson reflects in a hushed, intimate tone over delicate acoustic guitar melodies. The accompanying music video offers fans a heartwarming glimpse into his life, featuring cherished home videos alongside his three daughters with the encouraging message: “Now you go move those mountains / And sail across the oceans / Go show the world and prove / There’s nothing you can’t do.”

In a discussion with Rolling Stone regarding his musical aspirations—having previously delivered memorable spoken-word moments on Wyclef Jean’s 2000 track “It Doesn’t Matter” and showcased his vocal talents on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “You’re Welcome” from the original animated Moana—Johnson confessed that music has always felt innate to his upbringing.

“I always like to say I sing from the heart — and I sing in keys that don’t exist. So it’s a good combo,” he playfully remarked. “Growing up in our family, and Polynesian households in general, music, ceremonial dance, and storytelling are constants. It was simply part of the atmosphere.”

Drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, George Jones, and Willie Nelson—the latter of whom gifted him a coveted replica of his iconic Martin “Trigger” guitar—Johnson admits his formal songwriting catalog is modest. He noted contributing minor creative touches to Tech N9ne’s 2020 track “Face Off” before collaborating with his wife Lauren and fellow producers Tiana and Kayla to bring the new Moana project together, ultimately reaching out to island-music standout Iam Tongi.

Tongi returned shortly after with a deeply personal draft of “Your Dad.” Johnson recalled breaking down in tears upon hearing the demo. Originally written as an emotional tribute from Tongi to his late father and an ode to his future children, the song resonated deeply. “He’s telling his kids, ‘Oh, your grandfather was amazing,’ and then singing directly to his father in heaven,” Johnson shared. “It gave me absolute chills.”

Recognizing the emotional gravity of the piece, Johnson asked to adapt the narrative to reflect his own journey raising his daughters: Simone Alexandra, Jasmine Lia, and Tiana Gia.

While cinema and the wrestling ring remain his primary professional domains, Johnson describes music as a foundational anchor. Looking toward future artistic endeavors, he expressed a distinct affinity for traditional country and classic soul, citing dream sonic territories reminiscent of Sam Cooke meeting Merle Haggard.

For now, however, “Your Dad” exists purely as a personal labor of love. Free from the heavy expectations of box-office returns and streaming metrics, the song is simply a heartfelt message from a devoted father to his children.
