Double Fine Reclaims Rights to Its Games from Microsoft
Double Fine Productions has regained full ownership of its intellectual properties and publishing rights for all games developed during its time under Microsoft.
Now operating as an independent studio again, Double Fine controls the rights to its entire catalog, including Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and other projects produced under the Xbox umbrella.
Studio founder and head Tim Schafer shared the details during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games Daily podcast.
We got everything back, the IP rights are back to us, and we got the publishing rights back for all of our games.
Double Fine now directly collects revenue from sales of its titles. While Microsoft remains listed as the publisher on select digital storefronts, Schafer explained that platforms are still in the process of updating their metadata.
Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019, and the studio exited Xbox’s organizational structure in July 2026. Regaining complete independence allowed the team to reclaim control over its game portfolio.
Following the split, Double Fine also plans to bring back Amnesia Fortnight, the studio’s internal game jam where developers create prototypes for new projects.
