A new wave of change is stirring within the Doctor Who universe.
Russell T. Davies, the creator of Doctor Who, revealed that in the upcoming spin-off War Between Land and Sea the Sea Devils will be renamed Homo Aqua. According to the showrunner, viewers “will soon understand that calling them Sea Devils is racist.” Davies added that audiences should not regard these beings as mere monsters, since in the new series it is humanity that occupies the role of antagonist.
The five-part miniseries is slated for release in December and will depict the confrontation between humankind and the underwater civilization Homo Aqua. At the center of the story is negotiator Barkley (Russell Tovey), who finds himself caught between UNIT, led by Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Gemma Redgrave), and the Homo Aqua leader Salt (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). The conflict erupts after the ocean dwellers declare war on humanity in response to marine pollution. The project is presented as a science-fiction exploration of climate change.
Despite its ties to the established canon, the Doctor himself is not expected to appear in the series. No exact premiere date has been confirmed so far, though Davies has previously described the project as a “Christmas present,” hinting at a late-December launch.
