Sean Levy is currently shooting the standalone Star Wars film Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling.
After the enormous success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, it would be hard to simply walk away from the story. Director Sean Levy has not officially confirmed Deadpool 4, but on the podcast On Film With Kevin McCarthy he admitted he’s been sketching ideas for a possible follow-up — even though the thought stirs conflicted feelings.
According to Levy, the idea of another entry in the franchise is less inspiring than it is intimidating.
“Sequels are hard. They’re terrifyingly hard. I made three Night at the Museum films, and each time it was a grueling test.”
The director explains that the chief challenge with continuations is the razor-thin line between repeating what worked and eroding the very qualities that made the original beloved. A new chapter must feel novel while staying true to the character’s essence, and a single misstep can undermine fans’ trust.
Levy then reflects on the nature of finales and enduring franchises. He stresses that successful third installments only land when they draw on the emotional currency built by earlier films. He points to Back to the Future Part III, The Return of the King, and Avengers: Endgame — stories that earned their catharsis over years.
He says the same dynamic underpins Deadpool & Wolverine and the final season of Stranger Things: an existing emotional connection with audiences gives projects a head start. Levy notes that fan affection for Wade and Logan, together with the legacy of 20th Century Fox, helped the film work so effectively — the jokes and meta-humor landed because viewers already knew the characters.
For now, Levy is concentrated on a different major project. He is currently filming a standalone entry in the Star Wars universe with Ryan Gosling. Star Wars: Starfighter is slated to premiere on May 28, 2027.
