RPCS3 Update Enables PS3 Disc Playback on PC

Players will need to find a suitable disc drive.

The developers of the well-known PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 recently announced a new improvement allowing PC players to run PS3 games from discs, though this requires an appropriate disc drive model:

Now you can play your PS3 games on PC… STRAIGHT FROM THE DISC DRIVE! Plug and play! Having physical media allows you to run titles released even 20 years ago — without depending on any servers!

RPCS3 creators stated that this physical media startup option on PC was made possible thanks to digant73 and Megamouse:

Recent changes in RPCS3 have expanded direct disc drive launch support: previously it only worked on Windows, but now it is also available on Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. In addition, package installation times directly from the disc drive have been optimized.

The RPCS3 emulator developers published a list of compatible disc drives.

Other tech enthusiasts continue to develop PlayStation 5 emulators. Grand Theft Auto V is already quite playable, and some players hope that the upcoming GTA VI will also be runnable via an emulator at some point.
